Connecting an X-Road ecosystem to the Once Only Technical System of the European Union

By Hannes Lepp

This presentation explains how the X-Road platform is integrated with the European Union’s Once Only Technical System (OOTS). The main objective of OOTS is to enable citizens and businesses to complete administrative procedures online and allowing that the necessary evidences is securely exchanged across borders.

The presentation provides an overview of the technical architecture behind this integration and highlights some practical use cases.

Introducing X-Road in Chile

By Michael J. Heavey

Interoperability in Chile faces several challenges, starting with data management, organizational adaptation, and institutional readiness for digital transformation. Many institutions are promoting projects aimed at introducing X-Road as a solution. Currently, two projects are underway.

The first is Paso Centauro, which aims to create cross-border interoperability to facilitate the movement of cargo and people at the border between Chile and Argentina. This project is being developed in collaboration with two universities: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile) and Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Mendoza (Argentina).

The second project is based at the Library of the Chilean Congress (BCN) and involves several state institutions in Chile and abroad.

A brief overview of both projects will be presented, along with a discussion of the key challenges they currently face in advancing toward full implementation.

X-Road in the Quantum Age: Are We Ready?

By Mariia Bakhtina

It is not a question of if but when quantum computers will break the cryptographic algorithms that secure X-Road today. This session presents the results of a study mapping X-Road's cryptographic landscape and assessing its exposure to quantum threats. In this talk, we will walk through the key risks (including long-term data confidentiality, message authenticity, and PKI integrity) and outline a prioritised migration path to post-quantum cryptography.

X-Road 8 "Spaceship" - Navigating the Shift to Dataspaces

By Raido Kaju and Petteri Kivimäki

The upcoming major release, X-Road 8 “Spaceship”, builds on X-Road’s proven ecosystem model and robust security, taking it to the next level as a solid data space infrastructure. This milestone introduces the dataspace protocol stack, improved cloud compatibility, and a more modular architecture. It also makes X-Road technically compatible with the Gaia-X trust framework.

In this talk, we will explore:

  • What’s new in X-Road 8 and the scope of the transformation.

  • Updates to the X-Road terminology, protocols and common release schedule.

  • Why these changes are essential for the future of secure and trusted X-Road.

  • How they benefit X-Road users, from enhanced interoperability to alignment with emerging international standards.

  • The future of X-Road 7 development and migration to X-Road 8.

Join us to discover how X-Road 8 “Spaceship” opens the door to the next generation of secure, cross-border digital services. We will also launch the second X-Road 8 Beta, offering an opportunity to experience the new major version live.
